How was your audition?I was really lucky and got in through clearing as they had a big intake that year.
I did plenty of auditions for other Universities that I was considering and learnt quickly what I wasn’t looking for from my studies. My best tip, is to do a monologue that is a bit obscure and preferably a comedy or character based, nothing overly “dramatic” NO SARAH KANE! Something that says something about you!
At one audition we did monologues in a group and someone did the speech Roxie Hart does before singing Roxie from Chicago and someone else did Buttons from Cinderella !CRINGE! I strolled on to stage and did a speech from Fear and Misery in the Third Reich by Brecht to a stunned crowd who probably didn’t know what the Third Reich was. That was when I realised I did not want to attend that School!!
My point is, if you have to choose a monologue, think outside the box of “contemporary monologues”, and do something that reflects who you are and some of your values. -
What were the facilities like at school?1970’s (I think) Building, but amazing capability. 2 big theatres. Totally Flexible. Complete workshop for Sets to be built, big costume department. AV Suites. Great stuff.
This meant that our productions were of a high standard both acting and production value! It was an inspiring world to create work in. -
What 3 items would be your essentials for surviving drama school?Berocca,
Breath Control
A good friend that isn’t at drama school to keep you grounded! -
What were the lessons you learnt most from, and which could you have lived without?Meyerhold work. Body Control and all that! Brilliant.
I don’t think there was anything I would have lived without. -
What lessons did this school offer on surviving in the big bad world?N/A
-
Do you still have a network of friends from the course or school?Yes one that has helped professionally and personally.
-
What was the most inspiring lesson/tip you learnt at drama school?Gender Identity in Performance Art was the best module. Got to work with Lazlo Pearlman who is an incredible performance artist I love.
Oh and working with Greae, it was very inspiring!
As an actor I think you HAVE to experience different styles, and different ways of creating work as you can be easily lead by the school/colleges practitioneers, there are many others out there! -
What was the most embarassing moment at drama school? Not embarrassing as such but funny.
In a production of Fastest Clock in the Universe there was a birthday cake. Due to the air conditioning being on that night the candles burn down really far, and the icing on the cake set on fire and the actor who was meant to blow them out later in scene just paniced. I blew them out and realised we were now sat in pitch black and we had missed massive bits of dialogue.
So the 4 of us just sat there for a bit in mild panic! Then somehow carried on! -
How was your showcase?N/A
-
Which is the local pub where everyone liked to hang out?Piper on a Monday.
-
If you had to describe your whole drama school experience in a tweet what would it be?Was only where the fun began, it was the 3 years after that made the 3 years of study make sense. #realworldrealyou
-
What would your current self tell your younger self before you started your drama school?Keep slogging on, it will be worth it, but not for why you think!
